Big City Rock

so, i've been following the old siren six boys for a while, trying to get interested in their music. for some reason the lyrics don't hit as close to home as they did back in the day. part of that is nostalgia i'm sure, who knows. the music is easy enough to listen to, but much of what they have released since the siren six! breakup has been cheesy 80s rip-offs. anyways, i just wanted to point out that big city rock comes out with a cd in a couple of weeks, and i think they have a decent chance to become semi-stars. "all of the above" is just screaming to be put on a sports video game, or maybe i'm an idiot. if anything, it's harmless/fun/poppy music, and sometimes that's exactly what you need...

MAHLER!

so i'm sitting in the group study room at the ole humphrey, not studying, and i decided to listen to good old mahler's 5th performed by the chicago symphony orchestra and directed by sir george solti. i was enjoying the trauermarsch, which has the most spectacular trumpet solo of all time performed by the great adolph "bud" herseth, and decided to check the minnesota orchestra's spring concert schedule. i periodically check the schedule just in case they are playing said piece. lo and behold, may 4th-6th they are performing mahler's 5th! this is the piece that made me want to go to music school and teach music, we all know how that turned out, anyways... i've never been toa live performance of the piece, and while the minnesota orchestra can't really compare to the chicago symphony orchestra, i'm thoroughly excited at the prospect of hearing it live. so i quickly purchased my tickets on the floor, and damn they are expensive, maybe this can work as a valentine's day gift for theresa? nah, we don't really do v-day, but it should be a fun night out on the town. too bad it is the weekend before finals, bah.
